FAQs

Understanding the Bicolor Bloom

Share Your Feedback with Us. Your experience helps us understand how these trial plants perform and guide future releases.

Why does my petunia look solid pink or solid white right now?

The white star or speckled pattern in the bicolor petunias is light-sensitive. If your plant was recently shipped or grown during shorter, cloudier days (common in early spring), it naturally produces more pink pigment. In brighter summer sun, the white pattern becomes dominant, sometimes even resulting in mostly white blooms.

If your plant arrived looking solid, it is simply reacting to the light levels it experienced during its recent growth and shipping.

Why does the color of my petunia seem to change?

We have designed this trial variety to be a "combination of colors on one plant." Unlike static flowers, these petunias are incredibly reactive. The balance of pink and white is tied to light levels and temperature, and the pattern can actually shift daily!

When will the pattern change?

As the seasons shift and your plant settles into its new home, the "star" or speckled pattern will evolve. As the days get longer and the sun grows stronger, you will see the white accents emerge or intensify. You may even see one plant produce solid pink, solid white, and various patterned blooms all at the same time!

Is my plant defective?

Not at all! We are discovering that this variety has a truly unique nature. This "instability" is actually a positive—it means your garden will subtly change its look throughout the season based on the weather and sun exposure.

Does this mean I received the wrong plant?

No, you have the correct variety. Because the color ratio changes as the plant matures and the environment shifts, a solid-colored bloom today is just one phase of your plant's journey. As new buds form under different light levels, the signature bicolor look will unfold.

Glow and Brightness

Why is the glow faint upon arrival?

It is normal for plants to appear dim or experience a temporary loss of glow immediately upon unboxing. Because plants were in the dark during shipping, their metabolic momentum slowed to conserve energy. Simply provide several days of sunlight to fuel and restore their bioluminescence.

Do Light Bio Bioluminescent Petunias need special treatment to glow?

No special chemicals or "tricks" are required. These plants produce their own light naturally from within!

To keep their glow at its brightest, they simply need the same love you’d give any favorite plant: plenty of sunlight to recharge their energy, regular watering, and consistent feeding. Just like us, the healthier and more nourished the plant is, the more brilliantly it will shine.

Which parts of the plant glow?

The entire plant is bioluminescent, but the youngest flowers and new growth are the brightest. As flowers age, their light naturally fades.

How bright are they?

They emit a soft, ethereal glow similar to moonlight. The light is most concentrated in the new flower buds.

When do they glow?

Light Bio Petunias are bioluminescent 24/7, though their soft light is only visible to the human eye in total darkness.

What is the difference between Bioluminescence and Fluorescence?

The difference lies in the source of the energy: Bioluminescence (internal) is light created by a chemical reaction within the organism. Like a firefly, our plants use their own metabolism to glow 24/7, requiring no external "charging" or blacklights. Fluorescence (external) is light absorbed from an outside source (like UV light) and reflected back. Without a constant external light source, the glow disappears. Bioluminescence creates its own light, while fluorescence is a mirror, it needs light to show light.

Is the glow a "chargeable" paint or a chemical spray?

Neither! It is 100% biological. The glow is powered by the plant's natural metabolism. It doesn't "charge" like glow-in-the-dark plastic; rather, it produces light continuously as long as the plant is healthy.

Does the "glow" ever run out?

No! The bioluminescence is part of the plant’s DNA. It will glow every day and night for the entire life of the plant.

What is the best way to experience the glow?

For the most magical experience, view your Light Bio Bioluminescent Petunias in total darkness—ideally a pitch-black room or a moonlit-free night.

Eliminate competing light. Even a dim phone screen or a nearby lamp can "blind" you to the bioluminescence. Turn off all electronics and allow your eyes 5‑10 minutes to fully adjust. You’ll be amazed at how the soft, steady glow reveals itself as your vision sharpens.

What if my plant stops glowing?

A fading glow is usually a sign that your plant needs more energy. To restore its brilliance, ensure it receives 6+ hours of sunlight, steady water, and essential nutrients. Pruning faded stems also helps the plant redirect its strength into fresh, glowing growth.

Why does the glow look like a soft white or pale green in person, but vivid green in photos and ads?

It comes down to how our eyes "cheat" in the dark. In low light, your eyes switch to "night vision" cells that are great at detecting light but poor at seeing color. Because the glow is a soft, natural light, your brain sees the brightness but loses the color, making it look like a shimmering white or pale green. A camera doesn't have this limitation; it can collect light over several seconds to reveal the plant's true, vivid green bioluminescence.

How do I take a photo of the glow?

Capturing living light is a fun challenge! Because the glow is soft and natural, standard point‑and‑shoot settings often won't see what your eyes see. For the best results:

Use Night Mode: Most modern smartphones have a "Night" or "Low Light" mode. Keep your phone very still (or use a tripod) while it takes a long-exposure shot.

Manual Settings (Pro Tip): If you’re using a camera app with manual controls, set your shutter speed to 10‑30 seconds and keep your ISO around 1600-3200.

No Flash: Ensure your flash is completely off. Even the tiniest bit of artificial light will wash out the plant’s natural bioluminescence.

Focus on the New Blooms: The youngest flowers glow the brightest, aim your lens there for the most vivid shots!

Care and Growing Conditions

Should I remove the compostable liner before planting?

No! Plant the Ellepot liner directly into the soil. It protects the delicate root system and prevents transplant shock, allowing roots to grow through the paper naturally for a healthier start.

Can I grow them indoors?

Yes, provided they get several hours of direct sunlight or sit under a bright grow light. Expect slower growth and fewer blooms during colder months when natural light is limited.

I live in a very hot climate (100°F+). Can I still grow these?

Absolutely. While they love the sun, they are sensitive to extreme heat. In southern climates, we recommend container growing (for better soil temperature control) and providing filtered light or morning sun only during peak summer heat.

Do I have to buy your specific fertilizer to make it glow?

No, but a healthy plant glows brightest! We recommend our 12-4-8 Petunia Nutrition, as its chelated iron provides the high energy needed for both growth and light production. If you use another fertilizer, just ensure it includes chelated iron to keep your plant’s "living light" at its full potential.

How often should I water?

Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Keep the soil moist, but never waterlogged.

When should I repot them?

Repot when you see roots emerging from drainage holes or when the plant outgrows its container. For outdoors, wait until all danger of frost has passed.

What is the ideal temperature?

They thrive between 65‑75°F. Keep them away from cold drafts or direct heat vents.

Safety, Restrictions and Ecology

Authenticity Notice: Light Bio does not sell or authorize the sale of seeds. Our bioluminescent technology is available exclusively in live plant form.

Are they safe for pets and children?

Like other petunias, Light Bio Bioluminescent Petunias are not intended for consumption.

Can I propagate or breed them?

No. Light Bio Bioluminescent Petunias are patented and sold exclusively for personal use. Unauthorized propagation or breeding is prohibited.

Why don't you sell seeds?

To ensure the highest quality and most vivid glow, we only ship established, rooted plants. Because our bioluminescent technology is a complex genetic trait, we do not authorize the sale of seeds by any party. This ensures that every plant meeting the "Firefly Petunia" standard is stable, healthy, and USDA-cleared.

Is this plant safe for the environment and bees?

Yes. The Firefly Petunia underwent years of rigorous review by the USDA and APHIS and is cleared for sale across the USA. Because garden petunias have no wild relatives in the U.S., there is no risk of cross-pollination with native species.

Will these glowing plants harm local firefly populations?

No. The bioluminescent genes come from a mushroom. Because the light is a soft, natural emanation rather than a harsh artificial bulb, it does not contribute to the "light pollution" that typically disrupts firefly mating.

Are you releasing other glowing plants, like Pothos, Mums, or Lilies?

We’re constantly experimenting! We are currently adapting our bioluminescent technology to other popular houseplants. Because every species has a unique biology, we’re taking the time to ensure a bright, stable glow for every new release. Join our "Glow-Getter" mailing list for updates!

We coordinate deliveries with your USDA Hardiness Zone. This ensures your plants arrive exactly when it is safe to plant in your area, typically starting in early spring. You will receive a tracking link as soon as they leave our farm. For more details on when we ship to each region, please refer to our Shipping Policy.

Why are people in other states getting their plants before me?

We prioritize shipping based on USDA Plant Hardiness Zones. We start with the warmest climates (Zones 8–10) and move north as the weather warms up to ensure your plants aren't exposed to freezing temperatures during transit.

Why does my plant look weary upon arrival?

We take great pride in our greenhouse care and protective packaging. However, the journey can be a bit stressful for live plants. It is normal for them to need a week or more to acclimate and begin to flourish.

If your plant appears more than just "travel-tired," please refer to our Refund Policy for guidance on identifying significant damage. For any concerns or assistance, reach out to our team at hello@light.biowe are here to help your glow grow!

How big is the delivered plant and how many flowers will it have?

Depending on your order, you may receive a set of 45mm starter plants in compostable liners ready to plant directly into soil or a larger 80mm plant in a ceramic pot. Your plant may arrive with or without some flowers and buds, but don't worry! They grow rapidly and will be covered in glowing blooms within weeks of planting with proper care.
