FAQs
Glow and Brightness
Do Light Bio Bioluminescent Petunias need special treatment to glow?
No special chemicals or "tricks" are required. These plants produce their own light naturally from within!
To keep their glow at its brightest, they simply need the same love you’d give any favorite plant: plenty of sunlight to recharge their energy, regular watering, and consistent feeding. Just like us, the healthier and more nourished the plant is, the more brilliantly it will shine.
Which parts of the plant glow?
The entire plant is bioluminescent, but the youngest flowers and new growth are the brightest. As flowers age, their light naturally fades.
How bright are they?
They emit a soft, ethereal glow similar to moonlight. The light is most concentrated in the new flower buds.
When do they glow?
Light Bio Petunias are bioluminescent 24/7, though their soft light is only visible to the human eye in total darkness.
What is the best way to experience the glow?
For the most magical experience, view your Light Bio Bioluminescent Petunias in total darkness—ideally a pitch-black room or a moonlit-free night.
Eliminate competing light. Even a dim phone screen or a nearby lamp can "blind" you to the bioluminescence. Turn off all electronics and allow your eyes 5‑10 minutes to fully adjust. You’ll be amazed at how the soft, steady glow reveals itself as your vision sharpens.
What if my plant stops glowing?
A fading glow is usually a sign that your plant needs more energy. To restore its brilliance, ensure it receives 6+ hours of sunlight, steady water, and essential nutrients. Pruning faded stems also helps the plant redirect its strength into fresh, glowing growth.
Why do Bioluminescent Petunias look blue to me but green in photos?
It comes down to how our eyes "cheat" in the dark. In low light, your eyes switch from color-sensing cells to "night vision" cells. These night cells are very sensitive to blue light but struggle to see green. Because the Bioluminescent Petunia’s glow is soft, your brain misinterprets the color as a pale blue. A camera, however, doesn’t change its settings in the dark; it captures the true chemical color of the Bioluminescent Petunias, which is a vivid green.
How do I take a photo of the glow?
Capturing living light is a fun challenge! Because the glow is soft and natural, standard point‑and‑shoot settings often won't see what your eyes see. For the best results:
Use Night Mode: Most modern smartphones have a "Night" or "Low Light" mode. Keep your phone very still (or use a tripod) while it takes a long-exposure shot.
Manual Settings (Pro Tip): If you’re using a camera app with manual controls, set your shutter speed to 10‑30 seconds and keep your ISO around 1600-3200.
No Flash: Ensure your flash is completely off. Even the tiniest bit of artificial light will wash out the plant’s natural bioluminescence.
Focus on the New Blooms: The youngest flowers glow the brightest, aim your lens there for the most vivid shots!
Care and Growing Conditions
Should I remove the compostable liner before planting?
No! Plant the compostable liner directly into the soil to protect the roots. We recommend planting all three plants together in one pot for a fuller look.
Can I grow them indoors?
Yes, provided they get several hours of direct sunlight or sit under a bright grow light. Expect slower growth and fewer blooms during colder months when natural light is limited.
How often should I water?
Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Keep the soil moist, but never waterlogged.
When should I repot them?
Repot when you see roots emerging from drainage holes or when the plant outgrows its container. For outdoors, wait until all danger of frost has passed.
What is the ideal temperature?
They thrive between 65‑75°F. Keep them away from cold drafts or direct heat vents.
Safety and Restrictions
Are they safe for pets and children?
Like other petunias, Light Bio Bioluminescent Petunias are not intended for consumption.
Can I propagate or breed them?
No. Light Bio Bioluminescent Petunias are patented and sold exclusively for personal use. Unauthorized propagation or breeding is prohibited.

When can I get my order?
We coordinate deliveries with your USDA Hardiness Zone. This ensures your plants arrive exactly when it is safe to plant in your area, typically starting in early spring. You will receive a tracking link as soon as they leave our farm. For more details on when we ship to each region, please refer to our Shipping Policy.
Why does my plant look weary upon arrival?
We take great pride in our greenhouse care and protective packaging. However, the journey can be a bit stressful for live plants. It is normal for them to need a week or more to acclimate and begin to flourish.
If your plant appears more than just "travel-tired," please refer to our Refund Policy for guidance on identifying significant damage. For any concerns or assistance, reach out to our team at hello@light.bio—we are here to help your glow grow!
How big is the delivered plant and how many flowers will it have?
Depending on your order, you may receive a set of 45mm starter plants in compostable liners ready to plant directly into soil or a larger 80mm plant in a ceramic pot. Your plant may arrive with or without some flowers and buds, but don't worry! They grow rapidly and will be covered in glowing blooms within weeks of planting with proper care.
