Behind the Science
When we launched the original Firefly™ Petunia, our primary milestone was proving that living, self-sustaining light was possible in a beloved garden plant. But in our biotech labs, that was just Chapter One!
We sat down with Jim Devereux, co-owner of Green Fuse Botanicals, to discuss how his team engineered higher vigor, brighter luminescence, and vibrant new colors — plus what home gardeners can expect from our upcoming 2027 collections.
“Light Bio revolutionized the entire concept of bioluminescence in plants; we at Green Fuse Botanicals are fortunate enough to play a small role in plant development,” Jim reflects.

Q: The original Firefly Petunia featured classic white blooms. What was the journey like to bring bold color into the lineup?
Jim: "Home gardeners love bold, saturated color on their patios, so creating a vibrant pink was high on our priority list. The major challenge was incorporating natural floral pigments (anthocyanins) without disrupting the plant's internal caffeic acid cycle — the metabolic loop that fuels its bioluminescent glow.
By selecting high-vigor parent lines with robust metabolic throughput, we created Firefly Moonlight™ Pink. The result is a vigorous, trailing plant covered in saturated pink blooms by day that transitions into a soft, glowing canopy at dusk!"

Q: We heard there was a bit of serendipity behind Pink Surprise. How did that variety come to be?
Jim: "Science doesn't always follow a straight line — sometimes the most fascinating breakthroughs happen by surprise! During trial selections, our team noticed a unique line whose petal pigmentation reacted dynamically to local temperature and sunlight levels.
Instead of static, uniform pink, this variety produces an ever-changing display of solid pinks, crisp whites, and starry bicolor patterns across a single plant! We embraced this reactive magic and named it Firefly Moonlight Pink Surprise. In cooler spring and fall weather, deep pinks dominate; in hot mid-summer sun, striking white stars burst through."

Q: How does plant vigor directly impact the bioluminescent glow?
Jim: “A stronger metabolic engine doesn't just mean a faster-growing plant in garden beds — it directly powers a brighter, more uniform bioluminescent output. Selecting lineage that will not only maintain the bioluminescence but, equally important, perform in the garden, is the result of thousands and thousands of crosses.”
Our new genetics boast 2 to 3 times the growing power of early release lines, filling containers faster and producing higher bloom counts per plant.

Q: What can the Glow Getter community expect from the new 2027 collections?
Jim: “We realize the opportunity and obligation in breeding bioluminescent plants for the garden that deliver consumer success and awe. Each new selection must undergo a minimum of nine months of trialing in multiple climatic zones. We are committed that Firefly petunias will perform in every part of the nation.”
We have officially retired the original Firefly Petunia to make way for two distinct, upgraded collections built for enhanced plant habit, higher bloom counts, and 2 to 3 times more growing vigor:
Firefly Moonlight Collection:
Engineered for high outdoor performance in hanging baskets, window boxes, and large patio containers. Joining Moonlight Pink and Pink Surprise is Firefly Moonlight Blue! Its deep violet-blue blooms offer rich daytime color, while after dark, intensely glowing stems and lush foliage frame the dark petals in a striking biological backlight.
Firefly Nightlight™ Collection:
Featuring Firefly Nightlight White, an all-new compact, upright mounding petunia with clean, crisp white blossoms — specifically engineered for 4", 5", and 6" tabletop planters, small patio pots, and indoor spaces under LED grow lights.
