Your Top Autumn Indoor Care Questions, Answered!

Now that October has arrived, most of our Firefly™ Petunias are officially settled into their cozy new indoor spots! But transitioning from open outdoor sunshine to indoor living space brings a brand-new set of questions.

From adjusting grow light distances to handling dry furnace heat, our inbox has been buzzing. Today, we’re opening the Glow Getter Mailbag to tackle five of your most frequently asked autumn care questions!

"My petunia dropped a few yellow leaves right after I brought it inside. Is it dying?"

Don't panic! A small amount of yellowing or leaf drop in the first 7–10 days is a completely normal reaction to changing light levels and humidity—think of it as your plant adjusting to its new indoor room.

What to do: Gently pick off the yellow leaves, make sure it’s receiving consistent light, and resist the urge to overwater! Once the plant adapts to its new environment, fresh green growth will follow.

"How close should my indoor grow light actually be?"

Distance matters! If your grow light is too far away, the plant will stretch out and get "leggy" searching for light. If it's too close, heat can crisp delicate petals.

The Sweet Spot: Place full-spectrum LED grow lights 6 to 12 inches directly above the top canopy.

Pro Tip: LEDs run cool, but always touch the leaves nearest the bulb—if it feels hot to your skin, back the light off an inch or two!

"The soil stays wet much longer inside than it did on my sunny patio. How should I adjust watering?"

Outdoors, wind and high heat dry out pots quickly. Indoors, lower airflow means water evaporates much more slowly!

The Golden Rule: Always check the soil at both the top and bottom of the pot before watering. Only water when the topsoil is dry, and ensure the soil at the drainage holes isn't still wet—overwatering in cooler indoor rooms is the #1 cause of root rot!

"My home heater just turned on for the season. Will dry indoor air hurt the glow?"

Forced-air heaters lower room humidity rapidly, which can cause leaf edges to crisp or slow down metabolic activity.

Keep Your Distance: Never set your plant directly over or next to an active heating vent or radiator blast!

Humidity Boost: If your home feels particularly dry, grouping your petunia near other houseplants or running a small room humidifier keeps the foliage happy and the metabolic engine running smoothly.

"Should I keep fertilizing my plant through the fall and winter?"

Yes, but scale it back! Because your petunia is a perennial biotech plant powered 24/7, it doesn't go into full winter dormancy if kept warm under indoor grow lights.

The Autumn Feeding Schedule: Cut your balanced, water-soluble fertilizer to half-strength and apply every 2 to 3 weeks. This provides just enough fuel to power new growth and light production without burning the roots.
