We just returned home to Light Bio headquarters from Columbus, Ohio, and our entire team is still buzzing from an unforgettable few days showcasing the future of bioluminescence. Cultivate is always a massive event for the green industry, but this year marked a monumental, history-making milestone for us.
If you were one of the hundreds of growers, retailers, or plant lovers who lined up to step inside our booth, you know exactly what we are talking about. But for those who couldn’t make it to Ohio this summer, grab a seat—because a massive page has just turned in the history of living light.
Third Time’s the Charm: Inside "The Glow Chamber"
Ever since we introduced the world to the Firefly™ Petunia, our biggest dream has been to let people experience its natural night-vision glow exactly the way it was meant to be seen: in total, undisturbed darkness.
At previous trade shows, we attempted to build dark rooms to display the plants. They were good, but we knew we could do better. Cultivate ‘26 marked our third attempt at mastering a fully blacked-out exhibition room, and we are proud to say we finally built the masterpiece.
We officially christened it "The Glow Chamber."
Stepping out of the bustling, bright trade show floor and into the absolute darkness of the chamber was pure, unadulterated magic. Visitors walked through a literal tunnel of light, surrounded by walls of hundreds of glowing petunias. There is truly nothing on Earth quite like witnessing a living wall of biological green light in person—it completely rocked everyone's world. Packing out that chamber day after day and hearing the gasps of awe was the absolute perfect way to cap off our season.
The Cover of *GrowerTalks*: "A Shot in the Dark"
As if the crowd's reaction wasn't enough, we received the ultimate honor of having our journey celebrated on the front cover of the special Cultivate ‘26 edition of GrowerTalks magazine!
The featured cover story, beautifully titled "A Shot in the Dark" highlights the sheer grit, ambitious collaboration, and willingness to take massive risks that it took to create this entirely new category of ornamental plants. From our early days experimenting in the lab to building a robust commercial distribution network with amazing partners, seeing our team's labor of love recognized on the industry's biggest stage was an incredibly humbling moment.
End of an Era: Retiring the Original Firefly™ Petunia
While we were busy celebrating our successful season, Cultivate ’26 also carried a bittersweet note. This event officially marked the end of an era: We have officially retired the Original Firefly™ Petunia. As a first-generation, category-creating product, the original Firefly™ Petunia made history and proved to the world that bioluminescent genetics are entirely stable and viable. But plant breeding moves at warp speed. Light Bio scientists have been working around the clock to perfect the horticultural platform around our technology—balancing deep luminosity with robust, commercial-quality plant habits.
